A Christmas Day outing at a Thai golf course ended in tragedy for two South Korean tourists who were visiting with their wives. The BBC reports that 76-year-old Jaseoong Ha and 68-year-old Jun Yong Sung drowned in a freak accident Tuesday as they tried to cross the Nan River in a golf cart while returning to their resort in central Thailand. Local media explains that the only way to get across the river is on a floating platform rigged with slings and a pulley, and the men's cart was lined up and ready for its crossing when another cart slammed into it from behind, sending them straight into the water. Who was driving the cart that hit them: their own wives.

Both women said their husbands could swim, but apparently the undertow played a part in dragging them under the water, a police rep tells AFP. A caddie who also fell into the river was pulled to safety by a fisherman who rushed to the scene. The AP reports that a search lasting 50 hours finally retrieved the men's bodies, one about 1.5 miles away from the accident, the other more than 6 miles away. The older man's body was found Wednesday night, his younger friend Thursday morning, per the local provincial governor. One of the wives was also hurt and is recuperating at a hospital.
