Similac Baby Formula Recalled Over Beetle Contamination

Similac powdered baby formula may have insect parts in it and is being recalled by maker Abbott Laboratories, Bloomberg reports. The company says it found larvae and body parts of a common beetle in its product during routine quality checks at a Michigan plant and halted production. The voluntary recall could cost the company $100 million.

The liquid version of the formula isn't affected; it's only powdered Similac sold in plastic containers and in 8-ounce, 12.4-ounce, or 12.9-ounce cans. The FDA sees no serious health risk, but says a child who consumes contaminated formula could get a stomach ache and refuse to eat.
