Thieves Steal Concentration Camp Gate

A gate with the chilling Nazi slogan "Arbeit Macht Frei"—"Work Makes You Free"—has been stolen from the former Dachau concentration camp in Bavaria. The 75-by-37-inch gate was set into a larger gate and security guards noticed it missing yesterday morning, reports the AP. Police have appealed for witnesses to the theft, which the head of the regional foundation of memorial sites calls an "ignoble act," and security at the former camp may now be stepped up, AFP reports. A gate with the same slogan was stolen from Auschwitz in 2009 and a Swedish neo-Nazi was jailed for the theft. (Earlier this year, Walmart and other retailers apologized for offering an "inspirational" poster featuring the Dachau gate.)
