As a member of the student council at Desert Oasis High School in Las Vegas, Anthony Martinez has helped out plenty with planning for the upcoming prom. But what the gay teen really wanted was a date to the dance, Inside Edition reports. Earlier this week he tweeted (all caps his): "I DONT WANT TO DATE YOU I JUST WANT A GUY AS A DATE TO PROM. I ALWAYS HELP WITH DANCES ITD BE NICE TO GET ASKED TO ONE." Luckily, his best friend, Jacob Lescenski, saw Anthony's message come down his feed and decided to ask Anthony (whom he calls an "amazing guy") as his own date—even though Jacob is straight, NewNowNext.com reports. The way Jacob made what's being called the ultimate "promposal": with a giant banner he unfurled in school on Tuesday.
"You're hella gay, I'm hella str8, but you're like my brother so be my d8?" the sign read. Anthony was obviously moved, posting on Tumblr that Jacob is "a real man … [with] the guts to fulfill my gay student council dream. … I couldn't ask for a better person in my life." Anthony also obviously accepted, tweeting, "Guess who just got asked to prom by @JacobLescenskii," to which his BFF responded, "love you dude," complete with happy-cry and heart emoticons. Just as touching as their friendship are the positive responses that have been flooding Twitter, NewNowNext.com notes, including one supporter who posts, "Two excellent young men. Have a hella great prom!" and a teacher who writes, "I'm making an article about your act required reading for my class." (More high school prom stories.)
