Malcolm-Jamal Warner was on a family vacation in Costa Rica when things took a tragic turn Sunday, ending with the Cosby Show actor's drowning death at age 54. A statement from Costa Rican authorities obtained by People and CNN states that after Warner was caught in a strong current and swept away, bystanders were able to help get him to shore. But the actor was "lifeless" and the Red Cross ultimately declared him dead at the scene, the statement says. A Red Cross spokesperson says paramedics from the organization performed CPR on Warner for more than 20 minutes, but were not able to resuscitate him. Authorities say he "apparently died as a result of asphyxiation by submersion." TMZ's sources say a second person was also affected, and was hospitalized in critical condition, but the gossip site offers no further details.
In recent years, Warner had remained in the public eye, hosting a podcast called Not All Hood alongside Weusi Baraka and Candace Kelley since May of last year. He was also a Grammy-winning musician, winning for a Stevie Wonder cover he performed on in 2015; he was nominated again in 2023 for best spoken word poetry album. His recent acting credits included the TV shows The Resident, the Wonder Years reboot, Grownish, and 9-1-1. But while he shared about them on social media, he chose to keep the identities of his wife and daughter, who was born in 2017, private, TooFab reports.
