President Trump isn't just deploying federal troops to the streets of DC—he is going out on patrol himself. "I'm going to be going out tonight, I think, with the police and with the military, of course," Trump told conservative radio host Todd Starnes on Thursday, reports the Hill. "So we're going to do a job." The White House has not provided any details of what Trump might be doing when he goes out with the National Guard.
The surprise announcement comes a week after Trump ordered hundreds of members of the Guard to the district, as well as a temporary federal takeover of the Capitol police. (The latter move was tempered by a judge.) A number of Republican-led states also have sent members of their own Guards to DC.
