Obama, McCain Take Fight to Pages of Journal

Barack Obama and John McCain are appearing together today on one battleground—the opinion pages of the conservative Wall Street Journal. Obama sticks almost exclusively with economics, mentioning the paper’s own reservations with McCain’s housing rescue plan. He’s also quick to remind readers in upper tax brackets they’ll still pay “capital gains and dividend taxes one-third lower than they were under President Reagan.”

McCain sounds a familiar note on economics: “I will fight the Democrats’ plans to redistribute the fruit of America's labor and turn our economy into a full-fledged disaster,” he writes, before underlining his foreign-policy credentials. “There is great need for American leadership in the world, and I understand that only by exercising that leadership with grace and wisdom can we be successful in safeguarding our interests.”
