US | Alvin Greene Alvin Greene Profile: We Still Don't Know Much Family and friends say he's smart, shy, and 'hard-headed' By John Johnson Posted Jul 6, 2010 3:55 PM CDT Copied ,In this June 9, 2010 file photo, South Carolina Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate, Alvin M Greene, holds a campaign flyer. (AP Photo/Mary Ann Chastain, File) The AP visited South Carolina and the home of Alvin Greene to try to shed light on the surprise Senate candidate. We learn ... not much, because Greene was less than forthcoming, at one point ordering a reporter ouf of the house he shares with his ailing father with a gruff, "Go! Go! Go! Go!" Some tidbits: He earned the nickname "Turtle" in high school because he was so withdrawn. His high school tennis coach remembers him as smart, but a loner. "I do remember he wasn't outgoing and he was picked on unmercifully." His older brother expresses great pride in his brother's electoral feat but says he's "hard-headed" about taking advice on running a campaign. His mother died of cancer when he was a boy, and a brother died of cystic fibrosis. Most in his hometown of Manning now know of Greene, but few actually know him personally. He's also grown wary of most media requests. Read These Next Melinda French Gates reacts to her ex showing up in new Epstein files.
